Mangrove-shrimp farming: Balancing economic, environmental and social objectives for communities in the Mekong River Delta (funded by Murdoch University, 2022)
This project undertakes a survey in the Mekong River Delta to study the benefits and costs of mangrove-aquaculture systems (MAS). The results show that MAS provides a high average benefit-cost ratio, while being the least expensive in terms of investment and suitable for people with limited financial capacity. MAS can also produce other economic and environmental benefits, such as carbon mitigation, with less overall risk than other systems. While the findings draw from survey data in a specific location, they highlight the benefits of MAS as a possible triple-win approach towards sustainable development and emphasize the importance of complementary programs, such as awareness enhancement, communication, and training.
