Women's Leadership and Provincial Governance in Vietnam
Speaker: Dr Mai Nguyen, Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU
This webinar will present research findings from a study investigating the impact of women’s participation and leadership in provincial boards across Vietnam’s 63 provinces from 2005 to 2020. The findings reveal that higher female representation in leadership enhances public investment and government expenditure, leading to more efficient resource allocation. However, no significant effect is observed on the human development index, likely due to the long-term nature of its components. While collective female representation positively influences governance, individual female leaders show no impact on socio-economic development. This study underscores the importance of gender equality in leadership for fostering effective governance and resource management.
