Assessment of forest-based carbon break-even pricing (funded by the OECD, 2019)

Quantifying the cost of carbon sequestration in the forest sector is essential for planning and achieving climate commitments, such as those outlined in the Paris Agreement, at global, regional, national, or sectoral levels. This project offers a global, bottom-up assessment of the break-even carbon price required to implement forest plantation and forest conservation efforts at the country level for 166 nations, including Vietnam. This research constructs a global dataset of key cost factors, examines their global distributions, and conducts a cross-country assessment of cost differences associated with alternative forest programs (plantation and conservation). The assessments provide an approximation of the cost-effectiveness of forest carbon sequestration compared to non-forest climate mitigation approaches.
